Cosmetic Dentist in Amherst, NY

Douglas Hamill DDS is an experienced cosmetic dentist serving patients in Amherst, Williamsville, and throughout Western New York for over 17 years. His goal is to surpass your expectations by providing custom tailored oral health care utilizing the latest technology, and masterful skills.

Just as “cosmetics” can conjure up images of mascara and exfoliants, cosmetic dentistry refers to dental work designed to improve how the teeth look, with appearance complementing an already healthy and functional mouth. Once all oral hygiene issues have been effectively treated, minimized, and cured, a cosmetic dentist checkup may recommend. This type of treatment will permit individuals with healthy teeth to enhance and perfect their smiles, potentially with an additional curative effect on the teeth and gums. Fillings are an example of a treatment a cosmetic dentist would perform; though they are integral in healing dental caries and preventing further decay, fillings can be customized to match the color and appearance of a person’s teeth, granting both superficial and hygienic benefits to the patient.

Cosmetic Dentistry in Buffalo, NYIf you are considering cosmetic treatments of any kind, your first step is to schedule a consultation with your dentist to ensure that you have no chronic conditions that might contraindicate cosmetic work. The last thing that you want to worry about is having to undo cosmetic treatment in order to attend to a serious, underlying condition, so this consultation will provide the foundation for the cosmetic work that you will be able to receive. You should express to your dentist what you like about your smile and which aspects of your teeth you wish to improve, as your goals will guide the majority of the cosmetic dentistry process. Then, your cosmetic dentist will conduct exams to scan for any preventative conditions or issues, and you will be able to proceed from there.

Dr. Hamill will perform several tests and scans on your teeth in order to get a sense of which parts of your mouth may benefit from cosmetic work. After a review of your dental work and health history, your dentist may take photographs and even X-rays of your teeth, and impressions will be made from your lower and upper teeth to create an accurate cast of your mouth. Your cosmetic dentist will examine this data and present you with cosmetic options that may be ideal for improving the appearance of your smile. A computer modeling software can be used to create realistic images of what you can expect from each possible treatment. Once you and your dentist have decided upon a treatment, you will set an appointment for the cosmetic procedure and devise a schedule of follow-ups to check on your progress.

There are numerous popular cosmetic treatments that you may wish to discuss with your cosmetic dentist during the initial consultation. Composite bonding involves the application of a material similar in appearance to enamel to the surface of a tooth in order to restore the tooth’s appearance after a fracture or discoloration. Dental implants can fill in the gaps left by missing teeth, improving a smile and blending in with actual teeth, while veneers can be affixed to the exteriors of teeth to fill in gaps or improve color. Teeth whitening, a particularly popular treatment, can undo years of stains that accumulated due to diet or oral health issues. Any of these cosmetic treatment options, or several of them, may be ideal for your teeth, so ask your dentist about which would allow you to achieve your brightest and clearest smile.

Most fillings are made now from composite, synthetic resin. There are many companies that manufacture this material, and due to its popularity, cost efficiency, and versatility, we use composite resin as a filling material in all our dental procedures. There has been much debate about the safety and usefulness of mercury amalgam fillings, another trendy option. There is no scientific consensus on the matter, but nevertheless, our office has not used amalgam mercury filling in over 10 years. – LEARN MORE
